Selfies. They have become a part of our daily routine and filled our camera rolls to the max. Believe it or not, there is a science to selfies. It takes the perfect combination of lighting, angles, and sometimes filters. In honor of National Selfie Day check out these tips for how to keep your selfies flawless, fierce and Instagram worthy.
Find the Right Light
Lighting is everything and natural light is always the best. Find a window or go outside and glow in all the sun’s rays. One of the easiest ways to find your light is to slowly spin in your selfie-ready position. When it hits you, you’ll know! For darker days, use your flash when necessary or invest in a selfie ring light.
Gotta Get Them Angles
The next section is all about finding ways to accentuate everything you love from the neck up.
- To give the illusion of a longer neck extend your head away from your neck.
- Hold your phone to the side instead of directly in front of you.
- Look up at the camera. To make your eyes look larger, slightly raise your eyebrows.
- Chin down.
Relax your shoulders, relax your mouth and exhale. Blowing air through your lips gives you that pouty look that everyone loves. No, not the duck lips. The “my lips are slightly open sexy face” is more like it.
Natural and fresh expressions are the best expressions. I participated in my first solo photo shoot not long ago and the photographer suggested closing my eyes until right before he took the shot. It turned out to be one of my best photos.
Selfies are serious business but that doesn’t mean you have to be. Add some funny faces and cheesy grins to liven up your selfie game.
Filter Game Strong
Rule #1. Don’t overdo it. Over editing makes you look unnatural and sometimes cartoon-ish. It’s okay if your skin isn’t perfectly flawless, you’re human. With most apps you can change the capacity of your filter so your photo looks less edited.
